Lot 1472
1854 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-55 CAC Approved. Well struck first year issue, the denomination in smaller letters than 1855-89 on this interesting Type date. Mintage started strong in 1854, but declined noticeably in 1856-57, reaching a nadir in 1858 when only a couple of thousand pieces were coined. From then on $3 coinage bounced along at relatively low levels as the odd-cousin denomination tried to gain a foothold. The design is by James B. Longacre who created many mid-19th century coin designs for US coinage such as the Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, Three-cent Silver, Three-cent Nickel, Shield Nickel, Gold Dollar, Liberty Double Eagle, and numerous fascinating and wonderful pattern coins during his day (1844 to 1869). Longacre died in office in 1869, and was replaced as chief engraver by William Barber (PCGS # 7969) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

1855 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-58. Mostly untoned and a very pleasant offering with its beaming luster over both sides. Second year of issue. Mintage declined from 1854 after few orders came in for the denomination from gold coin and bullion depositors. In days when the US Mints conducted free coinage of gold and silver (with only a modest seignorage charge for the service), depositors indicated which denominations they wanted their deposits in. Deposits could be in the form of foreign coins or bullion in various stages of rawness, from granules to home made bars to standard-issue bars from various private refiners. The $3 denomination being an odd-man-out, so to speak, it drew little attention in the years it was available from the Mints (1854-89) (PCGS # 7972) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

1856-S $3 Gold. . Breen-6356, Small S. NGC graded AU-58+ CAC Approved. Only 34,500 minted. Very close to Mint State. Light golden toning. Collectors are aware that Philadelphia Mint $3 pieces are scarce compared to the high-mintage 1854, San Francisco coins are rarer still. None seemed to be saved at the time of issue in 1856; apparently not even the Mint Collection acquired mintmarked pieces. Today, the 1856-S $3 is highly regarded in About Uncirculated condition.

The date about centered between the highest ribbon spot and the bottom of DOLLARS. The vertical shaft of the 1 is between O and the first L of DOLLARS. As on all uses of this logotype, the 6 is bold. The mintmark is the Small S variety and is very scarce according to Breen and others. Almost unavailable in Mint condition. The letter is slightly differently proportioned than the Medium S. Its position is beneath the ribbon knot, as always, and is slightly left of center. Pop 2; 24 finer (PCGS # 7975) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1878 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64. A beautiful golden example, loaded with original mint luster. This is a splendid vivid golden specimen of the unusual $3 denomination with Indian Princess design. Liberty is decked out in a fancy feather-plumed headpiece, with the word LIBERTY on the headband. The golden iridescence and sparkle is plain on both sides. Well struck for the date, certainly much better-quality than some similar high-end examples offered in recent years; we find it worthy of strong bidder attention. The $3 coins were made from 1854 to 1889 but usually in small numbers. The chief popularly collected dates if one wishes a Type coins are this 1878, and the 1854 or 1874 issues (PCGS # 8000) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

1878 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-63. A beautiful lustrous example and ideal for a top quality type set. The fully brilliant example we now hand over bidders beats (from a technical angle) practically all of the MS63 $3 that have passed through the various grading services in recent weeks. Unlike the typical survivor with its diminished luster, this one is above-average, with only the reverse bow incomplete, left by a weak blow of the dies (a common complaint due to the juxtaposition of the highest relief on Liberty being opposite this area of the reverse. A handsome coin that is very attractive from top to bottom, center to periphery (PCGS # 8000) .
